Simple Tomato Sauce for Pasta - Fresh Basil, 6 ingredients

I'll post a picture of this sauce with pasta, the next time I make it. It's a simple sauce that Grandma used to make sometimes. Very quick to make, and nice in the summer time. You can make basically the same sauce with fresh summer tomatoes, if you have some to spare. Or you can make an uncooked "sauce" to toss with cooked pasta for a pasta salad, using the same ingredients except for the onions. You could also add a spoonful of capers and/or diced olives to the sauce.

Ingredients

1/2 of a large onion or one small onion, chopped however you like

2-3 cloves fresh garlic, chopped or crushed, or 1 heaping tsp. chopped garlic in oil or water

2-3 tablespoons of olive oil

Fresh ground pepper

Several fresh basil leaves (or 1 teaspoon or so dried basil)

One large can whole tomatoes in juice (28 oz), preferably imported from Italy - seasoned OK - tomatoes broken up with your hands (diced tomatoes OK - see pic above)

Optional - salt to taste

Directions:

Place the chopped onion in saucepan, add oil and begin sauteing it over medium heat. Add the garlic and pepper. Cook for a few minutes, until the onion is transparent. Add the basil and tomatoes. Cook briefly. Add salt if desired.

Serve with pasta and parmesan cheese - we use vermicelli, angel hair pasta or ravioli.
